THE BEGINNING:
A Cricket Club has existed in
Laugharne since about 1870 however the first AGM of the club was
held on the 28th April 1889, and this is recognised as the date at
which the club was founded. The Centenary year was celebrated in
1989 where Laugharne CC played Glamorgan County CC XI. Some of
today's top cricketers played in that match!
The Cricket Club got their
current field, Wooford's around 1953 where they have played ever
since.
The year 1959 saw the Cricket
Club first running their now annual Carnival. That year the club
made £79/4s profit.
FIRST 100 YEARS:
The Centenary Year was in 1989
when Glamorgan C.C. played Laugharne. Such up and coming players
as Tony Cottey, David Hemp and Robert Croft took part in the Centenary Match
(Croft's
name was spelled wrongly and Hemp's was spelled "Help!")
A Centenary Book was published and memorabilia was sold during the
celebrations. The club is still going strong 19 years later.
RECENTLY:
Difficulties
arising with the lease of the Athletic Field. The Athletic Club
has now come to an agreement with Mr. Thomas, which will secure
the field and give the club the freehold. This will see that the
cricket and rugby club's have somewhere to play their matches for
years to come.
All all the local bodies and the
community of Laugharne support this project which will then allow
the Athletic Club to apply for major grant aid to help with this
development.
The Cricket Team now plays as part
of the Gwili Tāf midweek league on Wednesdays throughout the
summer.
